With ANZAC Day fast upon us, I thought that today I would review a useful book about AIF unit histories.
AIF Unit Histories of the Great War of 1914 – 1918, by Ron Austin. ISBN978 0 9808746 5 5. Published by Unlock the Past. Approximate cost $9.00 from Gould Genealogy. 32 pages.
This little book explains what an ideal unit history is and what it might contain. The chapters deal with the different sections of the military from the AIF Infantry Battalions, Cyclist Corps, Field Engineers, Light Horse Regiments/Brigades and others. With in each section there is a brief description of the battalion, the name of the unit history, with details, any Victoria Cross recipients and also if there is no unit history. Not every minor unit is mentioned and he says that it can be assumed that no unit history was produced. A very good starting point for searching for that Unit History.
Lest We Forget.
