I’ve taken a step into the world of DNA, with the hope of finding distant relations. I used Family Tree DNA for my test and have just uploaded it to a GEDMatch site and have
had a tiny bit of luck. I was contacted by a member of the local history group and we are very (6 generations ago) related. I then did some one-to-many search and have found a match that is only 4.5 generations distant. Now to email him.
I don’t really know what I expect to find out or even if it is going to be useful, I did the test mainly to see where in the world I came from. I showed that my ancestors were from Western Europe, i.e. England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany. I knew that already!
If you want to try DNA, yourself, here is the website: www.familytreedna.com When I did mine the cast was equal with the US$ but it might be more now.
Also DNA for genealogists by Kerry Farmer, is well worth a read. This is another Unlock The Past publication from Gould Genealogy.
